Interlayer Silylation of Layered Octosilicate with Organoalkoxysilanes: Effects of Tetrabutylammonium Fluoride as a Catalyst and the Functional Groups of Silanes

Interlayer silylation of layered sodium octosilicate (Na-Oct) with various organoalkoxysilanes was conducted using hexadecyltrimethylammonium ion-exchanged (C16TMA-Oct) as an intermediate in the presence or absence tetrabutylammonium fluoride (TBAF). The degree increased by adding TBAF. It is suggested that F− ions perform a nucleophilic attack on alkoxysilanes, which promotes reaction. C16TMA-Oct silylated octyltriethoxysilane (C8TES) 3-mercaptopropyltriethoxysilane (MPTES) to compare reactivity two A higher observed MPTES, suggesting accessibility this silylating agent into interlayer polar region C16TMA-Oct. Overall TBAF appears relevant catalyst for covalent surface modification silicates organic functional groups.
